SAMBAR, THE GREAT TAMIL DISH OF MAHARASHTRIANS: "chatrapathi shivaji's son sambhaji added a little tamarind to his dhal and none in the royal kitchen corrected him. of course,he loved his concoction and sambhar got its name." the story go es that the original recipe for sambar- a dish which is so intrinsic to tamil nadu cuisine- can actually be traced to maratha ruler chatrapathi shivaji's son. legend has it that shivaji's son Sambhaji, who was one of the maratha rulers,attempted to make dal for himself when his head chef was away. "he added a little tamarind to the dhal that he made and no one in the royal kitchen dared to correct him on the fact that tamrind was not used in dhal. sambaji loved his own concoction,which was then referred to as sambar. the other culinary contribution of the marathas, now popular in tamil nadu is "poli" (sweet roti). although sambhaji's sambar is more lore than recipe, and there are more than 50 varieties of samb
glass painting of maharajah serfoji ll : today is the 237th birth anniversary of maharajah serfoji ll. he was born on 24th september 1777. and became the rajah of thanjavur on 30th june 1798. his reign witnessed revival on literature, edu cation, music,dance, medicine, and infact his period was the golden era in the history of thanjavur. serfoji ll therefore devoted his life,interest, and wealth for the cultural uplift in spheres of literature,medicine, music,dance, drama and other fine arts, which paved the way for an upheaval in art,literary and cultural fields. it is recorded that serfoji built boats or doughs fit for coastal ships. the doughs are of no ordinary means but sufficiently big and powerfull. the one such he built at thiruvaiyaru on the banks of cauvery. sadar mahal palace and sarjah mahal was built by him in 1824. serfoji ll was more than a bibliophile. he also built dhavantari mahal where physicians of allopathy,ayurveda, unani and siddha researched their systems of

Tirukkadaiyur has one of elegant Brahmin quarters near the temple called as agraharams established by the Maratha ruler Serfoji I,a great  admirer of Brahmin poets and bards, in the early part of the 18th century. One of them remarked that he was a madman while another rejected this categorization explaining to the king that Subramaniya Iyer was only an ardent devotee of Goddess Abhirami. Seeking to know the truth himself, Serfoji approached the priest and asked him what day of the month it was i.e. whether it was a full-moon day or a new-moon day.
