Scholar king Serfoji II of Thanjavur was born on 24/9/1777. This multifaceted king had contributions and accomplishments in various fields. He is celebrated for his achievements, intellectual skills and literary works. He was the patron of arts, culture, classical dance, drama and music that flourished and encouraged during his reign. Sarasvati Mahal library  is named after him because he himself collected lots of manuscripts from various places and books from many countries and kept in his library.He preserved his library and ancient manuscripts very well. There are many manuscripts in various languages, like in Marathi, Modi (script), Sanskrit, Telugu, Tamil etc some read and many unread in the Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji's Sarasvati Mahal library (TMSSML) and also books in different languages, like in French,German,Latin etc. He had also contributed alot to Tamil culture and language. He was the patron of Tamil arts and literature too.  
He opened up free education to girls in Thanjavur. He established the first printing press in Devanagiri script, which  was told to be the largest printing press in south India, he performed cataract operation, he was an Engineer and built Manora tower, Sarjah and Sadar Mahal inside Thanjavur Palace complex, he installed lightning rods on top of Brihadeshwara temple vimana to avoid threats to the Big temple vimana from lightning, many famed music scholars and classical artists had attributed him in their work, song or play. 'Bhosala vamsa charitra' is one of  the longest and largest inscription in the world which is at Brihadeshwara temple campus was inscripted on king Serfoji II's order.  Nearly 90,000 people attended his funeral procession on 8/3/1832 in Thanjavur.

Its our duty to safe guard and preserve our history. Though generation and time changes, even mentality changes. Modern people, so as the officials are not aware of our past history nor might show interest to know about it.  No one is forcing to study history, atleast know history and have little value to it and to the descendents of the great kings or to the  existing Royal families and members. Take pride of our history, Past eminent personalities and heritage.
